Secret Life of Ants

Incredible Creatures in Creative Displays

The humble ant is everywhere, but sadly regarded mostly as a pest.
Now you can learn the secret lives they lead underground, and the important roles they play in our everyday environment, like breaking up waste and returning nutrients to the soil.

At this 1hr session, you'll enjoy the beautiful surrounds of The Sundowner. Our ant-keeper will introduce you to various species kept here, such as the trap-jaw ant, which snaps shut its mandibles at speeds of 50 metres per second — 2300 times faster than the blink of an eye! That makes it the fastest recorded strike in the animal kingdom.

This is an Ant Encounter like no other, with lots of interactive experiences:

See them at work and at prey. Live-feeding sessions are a great entertainment for the kids. Introduce them to insect photography with our provided macro lenses. End off with some ant art (using honey to write words) You'll even get to take home a founding ant kit i.e. a fertile Queen with eggs in a test tube!

Our 1hr Ant Encounter features 3 unique activities:

  • Use a macro lens to photograph them up-close!

  • Live-feeding session & Ant art

  • Take Home Founding Kit (Queen with eggs)

Happens from 3:30 to 4:30pm, every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
